Plugging in Firewire Device Causes Immediate PC Power-Off!?
I have a Mcally external hard drive enclosure with Firewire ports. When I plug it in to a firewire port, the PC powers off immediately. This happens most times, but not each time I plug it in. It doesn't matter if the enclosure is powered up or not. I tried different PC firewire ports - same issue. If I plug the device in with the PC off, it starts up no problem, and I can use the hard drive without issues.
I built the PC myself, if that makes any difference...

Both the back and front ports cause this problem; the back port came pre-wired; I checked and the front is wired correctly. Furthermore, a different firewire device works just fine. Hmmm... bad device? If so, why would only cause a problem if plugged in while the pc is on?
It does make quite a difference. If you wired the ports to the motherboard insecurely or incorrectly it can cause the system to spontaneously shut down. I've done this a few times myself when building systems. You might want to take the system apart and refer to the motherboard manual and the case instructions to ensure all your cables are in the correct order positives and negatives in the right pins.
