RAID 1 can be an external drive in the mac mini server?

looking to buy a mac mini server (new one with dual 500GB drives). possible add an external drive (via USB / FireWire) and add it to say, the other unit intenal hard to create a RAID 1 array? I want to keep the system drive operating independent of the data, so that the other 500GB drive will reflect the 500 GB external. Thank you. will use snow leopard.

On the basis of I see on the Apple site, no. They seem to have an external storage array (the Promise Fund drive via FireWire) is not only RAID 5. As this is a configuration server would not surprise me that Apple pre-configure the two 500GB drives in a RAID 1 array only for safety / security to keep the server running. Maybe someone here is a Mac guru and has a better understanding of these settings than me. Good luck!
