Using an old computer alias RAID vs Apple Time Capsule?
So my two friends and I moved to live together and we're trying to figure out how to create shared a great unit. I'm getting a Dell Power Edge 1300 (PII processor) server off Freecycle. My plan was to throw a PCI RAID controller card, a PCI Ethernet card and two SATA hard drives and running Windows 2000 on it. The user of Apple suggests that we must consider the Time Capsule that looks like an expensive external hard drive and the wifi router. It really is only designed for improved compatibility with Apple computers. I think our users should install MacFUSE/NTFS-3G apple or something similar to allow writing to NTFS, thus turning on Windows file sharing, which is built into OSX. The Dell might be an FTP server so that no matter what the record was formatted alienating the middle, but our technology roommate third less intelligent, and not being able to use real-time as a mapping network drive. Pro / cons of each option?
The third option sounds less appealing to me, since the disadvantages outweigh the benefits. As for choosing between a time capsule and the Dell server, I think that the server is likely to consume much more energy, which could be a problem if you are taking care of the energy bill (ie not living in a dorm), but can offer better compatibility with Windows machines from a time capsule (I'm not sure what CT scans are limitations in terms of usable file systems and compatibility with Windows). Either way, lack of file system support can be remedied on both sides - On the Mac side, adding support NTFS as you said, or at the side of Windows with MacDrive (or similar products if any). So uh ... ramblings aside, it looks like a time capsule is an unknown quantity, which warrants further investigation. If you can get easily in Windows machines and not only Mac (and your Mac pork no friend used all the space for your backups, haha), may be preferable as its energy consumption would likely be well below a full on the server. If you are not looking good, then the server would probably be better. Good luck!
