In Windows systems, Autochk.exe is the utility that checks the systems for integrity at the startup. It does the scan when the system is started after an unclean shutdown. However, at times this utility may lead to disk corruption without you having any idea about this. But, when the corruption occurs you can still recover hard disk by using in-built corrective methods. If you are unable to resolve the situation, then you should use a third-party windows data recovery software to recover maximum data from the inaccessible hard disk.
Consider a scenario wherein you are using the release version of Windows Vista on your system. In your system, you find that one of the volume is corrupted. You restart the system but unable to log on to the system. A black screen is displayed.
Cause:
The root cause of this scenario is that in Windows Vista, the Autochk.exe tool is used to identify the disk corruption case. This tool possesses different criteria from the one that is used in the NTFS-based systems. That is why, when NTFS identifies a volume as corrupted this tool does not verify the corruption. On the contrary, Autochk.exe reports the volume as clean which sparks a contradiction. This situation eventually results in a blank screen as the restart process stops responding.
Resolution:
To resolve this situation, you should perform the following steps:
Download the Automated Installation Kit (AIK) for Windows Vista Service Pack 1.
Create a Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) 2.1 disk.
Change the BIOS settings to boot from a disk.
Restart the computer by using the Windows PE 2.1 disk.
Run the following command and press Enter to fix the hard disk corruption.
chkdsk /f
The problem will be resolved after using the aforementioned steps and you will be able to access the system as earlier. However, there are times when you are unable to address the problem. In such cases, you should use a third-party windows data recovery software to recover disk. Such read-only tools are extremely safe to use as they do not overwrite the existing data while scanning the hard disk.
