What would make my external hard drive beep and not be regonized on my computer?
My iomega external hard drive is not working on one of my lap tops. It just beeps when I plug it in and never shows up on the computer. It works fine on my other lap top though. Any ideas? Both laptops are dells
NO SYSTEM RESTORE.
When the beep occurs you should also receive a message that your hardware did not install. It may have only occurred the first time you tried the drive. The reason it only happens once is the default setting is to ignore the hardware on subsequent attempts when the driver doesn't load.
Simple way to cure this:
go to system in control panel
go to device manager
got to the bottom of the list where USB controllers are located
expand that entry (click on the "+")
delete all entries
reboot
When it restarts it will reload all the USB ports (and devices)
Try your drive again but if it states the driver did not install, uncheck the "ignore" entry.
Delete that one USB port and do "Scan for Changes" from actions. This should force the driver load.
