External Hard Drives! Portable external hard drive or desktop external hard drive?

I am looking to buy an external drive for backups things on my laptop and desktop computer. I have two questions: 1) Should I buy a portable hard drive (only have to use USB - But the maximum space for it is 500 GB) hard disk or desktop (power adapter is needed - and the maximum space for it is 1 TB)? I usually only I use at home to back up things, but the idea of having a laptop is useful. Is there such thing as power adapters are more reliable? I just want a reliable custom die with all my data in it. 2) What brand hard drive do you recommend? I've been doing some research and it seems that WD is quite good, but then again so is Seagate apparently. There is also an HP one? Again I just want a reliable brand! Thanks:) But not an adapter one less reliable than a laptop?

OK, if you look for reliable, then I suggest you one adapter, I just bought 1TB Segate hard disk with adapter. I will recommend the same for you. but again, these are electronic fabrics, u cannot depend on them forever!
